It Was a Cold, Dark Night

This week we have been looking at animals that are nocturnal. We used the story 'It Was a Cold, Dark Night' to help build our understanding of which animals may come out a night time and where they might live. We have also have a special hedgehog visitor this week (Ned) who has slept throughout the day but caused mischief in the night time. The children have found him in lots of strange places, including: the book corner (reading the gingerbread man), in the paint pots and all the way on top of the projector. Wherever we found him, we were always sure to put him back carefully in his home of leaves so he could have a good, long sleep.

Whilst Ned slept, the children explored the classroom provision which included: sorting animals into nocturnal and diurnal groups; painting hedgehogs with forks to make them spikey; flicking frogs and toads into numbered lily pads and using scissor skills to make hedgehogs out of paper plates. We have also built upon our tallying knowledge from previous weeks to count accurately and record amounts of animals we found.

We have also been busy making hedgehog homes for any hedgehog around our school grounds who might be looking for a home. The children collected dry leaves for insulation and we made a tunnel opening so no foxes could get inside. We also put some water for the hedgehogs to drinks and decorated the home with natural recourses to make it feel more cosy.

The children have also helped to paint a nocturnal or a diurnal animal for a classroom display.
