We have a weekly spelling test every Monday, your child will do their spelling test at the back of their yellow homework books so that you can see how they do. New spellings will be sent home at the front of their yellow book on Monday. Please ensure that your child has their yellow homework book with them every Monday, if they do not have their book then their spellings will be sent home on a sheet of paper which can be easily lost.
We will send at least one reading book home every week, if the books is a short book then we will send home two books that week. The books have been getting longer and more difficult as the year has gone on so we want to ensure that your child can read the whole book and answer questions about it before giving a new book out. Your child will have a phonics book sent home every Friday.
1R have P.E every Monday afternoon and 1B have P.E every Thursday afternoon. Please ensure that your child has the correct P.E kit in school on these days and that they have weather appropriate clothing. Remember that children cannot wear earrings during P.E and teachers are not permitted to remove any earrings. Currently for 'feed forward' on a Monday morning Year 1 are having an extra P.E session with Beeactive.
The children have been working really hard on their phonics skills and as a result their reading is fantastic! if you would like to do some extra activities at home then please follow the links below and the instructions.
Whilst you do have to subscribe to phonics play to access the majority of their games and resources Picnic on Pluto is a brilliant game that you can access for free. The children have to read real and non-real words and sort them, giving them an opportunity to apply their phonics to unfamiliar words.
Discovery has got lots of fantastic resources for all subjects including phonics games. Langdale has got a user account for this website that all children can use to access the resources. If you would like to use this website put a note in your child's reading diary and their class teacher will provide you with these details.
Teddy Bear's Picnic
The children have really enjoyed this topic. They have been learning all about old toys, the materials they are made from and how they are different from the toys that they play with today. In English the children have been reading lots of 'Old Bear' stories and using these to help their writing. Well done to all of the children and parents for the amazing creative homework this half term. We were all really impressed with your teddy bear's lunchboxes and were pleased to see so many healthy lunches! Please have a look below at the pictures of some of your creative homework.
We have been really lucky to have some super Golden Time activities in Year 1 and we are so well behaved that most of us get to enjoy all of our Golden Time every week! Take a look at the pictures from some of our more recent Golden Time activities, most of the children have agreed that the Teddy Bear's Picnic was the best!
Victorian peg dolls
We have been learning all about old toys and comparing them to our modern toys. We found out that Victorians didn't have many toys and so they had to make their own using items around the house. We had a go at making our own toys.
In maths we have been learning all about measuring, we have been measuring weight and capacity. Our favorite lesson was when we had to follow instructions to make our very own potions. Miss Rushton and Miss Bickerton think that the brain power potion and magnificent mathematician potions definitely worked!
Three Parks Walk
Thank you to the parents and grandparents who joined us on our walk to the three parks. We were really pleased with the number of volunteers that we had and we know that the children really enjoyed sharing this trip with you. We had a fantastic time exploring our local area. We collected lots of leaves and sticks and when we got back to school we created our very own Stickman! Next week we will be writing poems about all of the exciting things that we saw!
