Our  intent

  • To ensure that every child becomes a reader, a writer and confident speaker by the time they leave Langdale Primary.
  • To promote and promote a love for reading, writing and high-quality literature into pupils at all ages.
  • To devise an English curriculum which is progressive and teaches knowledge and skills.

Developing a ‘Reading Culture’ at Langdale

  1. We Read across the curriculum: topic books, news articles, class magazines etc.;
  2. We do storytelling and re-enacting stories: we invite storytellers into school.
  3. We set up visits from authors and illustrators;
  4. All class teachers are expected to read a class novel to model expression when reading aloud.
  1. We have a Book Fair twice a year.
  2. We have strong links with Clayton library and classes visit weekly.
  3. We take part in the Summer Reading challenge run by the library each year.
  4. All KS1 children have a reading buddy from KS2 that meet weekly.
  5. Book clubs are run by members of staff
  6. Parents are invited to school during ‘share a story week’
  7. We take part in termly reading competitions run by The National Literacy Trust
  8. ‘What staff are reading’ displays around the school promote reading
  9. Regular competitions such as ‘get caught reading’
  10. Half termly reading cafes
  11. Children and parent books swaps
  12. Reading rockets scheme
